Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
